Language learning has two main aims – to develop the ability to communicate in another language and to acquire intercultural understanding. Being able to understand and respond in other languages is becoming increasingly important in our society and in the global economy. Learning about festivals and traditions from countries where the language is spoken helps children appreciate other cultures so that they are prepared to live in our multicultural society. Language learning is known to benefit other areas of the curriculum, for example children’s understanding of grammatical concepts in English. At Our Lady of Peace, children learn French in Key Stage Two.
