English is prominent in all areas of the curriculum. At Our Lady of Peace Primary School we aim to ensure that all English work is exciting, challenging and thought provoking. We follow the 'Talk for Writing' approach across the entire school. We believe English lessons should motivate and stimulate each child and enable them to develop skills in reading, writing and speaking and listening.
Phonics is taught across the school using a combination of:
- Jolly Phonics,
- Letters and Sounds,
- Read, Write, Inc.
Phonics screening testing is administered at the end of Year One.
If a child does not pass during Year One, the child will be retested at the end of Year Two
We develop our pupils’ ability to read, understand and respond to all types of writing. The development of reading strategies, sustained silent reading, group reading, guided reading and paired reading are an integral part of the child’s language development.
Guided reading has a dedicated 30 minute slot, each day, on every class timetable. Children are also heard read on an individual basis when appropriate. Children are supported by a range of different programmes and schemes such as 'Bug Club'. Children's reading is also supplemented by a whole school reading scheme based on the Oxford Reading Tree, Collins Pathways and Sunshine Spirals.
We encourage parents to be involved in their child’s reading development.
The school offers a variety of fiction and non-fiction books to challenge and support children’s reading development. Each class has a class reading box including modern and classic children’s literature. There is also the benefit of our KS1 and KS2 school libraries which the children have access to during the school day. Throughout the school, children are exposed to a wide range of literature. This introduces children to a wide selection of genre and encourages the development of higher order reading skills. Books are regularly reviewed and added to, to ensure that children are given ‘quality’ texts.
Speaking and Listening
Pupils have many opportunities to develop these skills through classroom discussion, group work and paired work debates and drama productions.
'Talk for Writing' allows children to write for many different purposes and audiences across the curriculum. Throughout the school pupils are given exciting and motivating assignments to ensure development of their writing skills – these include reports, letters, news articles, instructions, poem, short stories and many others. It is our intention to ensure that all learn to love language and writing.
We seek to incorporate Spelling and Handwriting into the development of Writing Skills. Children are taught a structured, multi-sensory approach to spelling, which is based upon learning word-families and spelling rules. Grammar, punctuation and spelling rules are taught in discrete lessons. These rules are then incorporated into units of work.
Handwriting skills, including the correct pen grip, are taught and then encouraged, throughout the age range, using cursive script.
